Web Summit 2021: Europe To Dominate The Next Decade In Tech?

Panel Discussion

November, 2021

Are we about to enter the golden age of European tech?

Panel discussion on the Startup University stage during Web Summit 2021 in Lisbon.

Europe is home to about 1/10th of the world’s unicorns, but US and Chinese tech companies are still way ahead in terms of how much funding is raised. However, Europe has ample opportunity to propel – and take leadership in – the global tech ecosystem over the next decade, for a multitude of reasons. Kat Borlongan, founding member of Scale-Up Europe, and António Dias Martins, CEO of Startup Portugal, discuss with Britta Muzyk-Tikovsky, CEO of Capscovil and editor-in-chief of Chillipicks, what it will take for Europe to reach its full potential.

Hear from Kat why it’s necessary to bring together executives from all important sectors – VCs, startups, corporates, research – to discuss what’s necessary: a diverse talent pool, investment, faster startup-corporate collaboration and transferring deep-tech research into tangible business.

António shares how fast Portugal’s startup scene is developing, what impact Web Summit has had on Lisbon since the technology conference moved here in 2016 and what is needed to make the most of the 450 million market that Europe offers.
