On May 25th, 2018, Digital Era, the yearly data security forum organized by IT and cyber security specialist Data Security Solutions and the Association of Latvian Certified Data Protection Officers in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Data State Inspectorate of the Republic of Latvia took place in Riga, Latvia.
In its 5th edition, Baltic’s largest event with this focus featured international data security experts from a wealth of industry segments as speakers. More than 1,000 high-level ICT professionals from local, regional, and international businesses, governments and government agencies as well as tech communities attended the event. Many more followed the live stream of the talks and discussions remotely.
One of the panel discussions, moderated by Capscovil founder Britta Muzyk-Tikovsky, focused on “Privacy by design”. Experts Anett Mádi-Nátor from Cyber Services plc, Silvan Jongerius from TechGDPR, Tobias Stepan from Teamwire, and Artjoms Krūmiņš from Also shared insights from their respective vantage points.
The topics that were discussed ranged from what exactly “Privacy by design” is to its impact on infrastructure, processes, and applications, and to how companies and startups alike can ensure data privacy. Talking from experience, the experts shared use cases and challenges, i.e. posed by the advance of facial recognition or user generated content.
The audience was provided with recommendations for a smoother and cost-effective implementation but also with tipps on suitable technologies like blockchain to augment privacy and security of the users’ data and to enforce the “right to be forgotten”. Rounding up the discussion, the panelists shared their opinion on the necessity of new types of eduction degrees, for example, a combined IT and law degree.
