Project Black Hungarian is a most unusual spy novel – a combination of facts and a fictional story that’s based on true events and real role models for characters.
Published in August 2014, recent developments in the automotive industry – the Volkswagen Diesel scandal starting in 2015 and the cartel case opened up in 2017 against 5 major car manufacturers – suggest that the spy novel was published ahead of its time.

Project Black Hungarian was a great read on several levels. First, of course, is the mystery of who or what organization is trying to sabotage the success of the technologies showcased during the rally. Knowing what we know about today’s world, is the idea of an organization trying to stop technological progress that could interrupt profits really not likely? Second, the WAVE rally is a real “thing” occurring annually through Europe. This book gave us fascinating information and stories about the rally and the people involved. Many references and events used in the book are real. Also, many technologies that provide tools for improving our environment are explained in a way that just adds to the suspense of the novel. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a different kind of mystery story to entertain and inform you. I read the English version, which was written very well.
I enjoyed the plot to the story and and the intricate web of characters kept me captivated. I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued by the all the facts about EV technology and appreciated the explanations given in the appendix. Because the details of the EV expedition are based on facts I also found this novel educational and became interested in a field that I previously knew little about.
