Reviews – Spy Novel Project Black Hungarian

Book Review

Project Black Hungarian is a most unusual spy novel – a combination of facts and a fictional story that’s based on true events and real role models for characters.

Published in August 2014, recent developments in the automotive industry – the Volkswagen Diesel scandal starting in 2015 and the cartel case opened up in 2017 against 5 major car manufacturers – suggest that the spy novel was published ahead of its time.

Therefore, your opinion is especially interesting for us on the following aspects:

  • How do you like the story in general – what did you like best/least
  • How do you judge the conspiracy theory
  • How well are the technical elements woven in
  • How do you like the writing style / narrative angle / suspense
  • How well are the characters defined – which one(s) do you like best/least and why
  • How do you judge the revolutionary technology in terms of technical feasibility
  • How do you like the cover and the illustrations in the story – how well do they fit the story (they are based on real pictures taken during WAVE)
  • What was your first impression of the book / after reading the blurb  – were your expectations met after reading the whole book
  • What did you think of the information added in the appendix of the book?

A modern, fresh and fast-moving thriller set in the evolving world of electric vehicle technology. Totally (and perhaps disturbingly) believable with twists and turns from beginning to end. Loved it!

Electric mobility is as complex as it gets and a closed book to many. The authors have succeeded in portraying the topic in an enjoyable and attractive way not only for enthusiasts but also for everybody new to electric vehicle technology; and in combining it with an ingenious storyline.
Neue Mobilitaet – Magazine of the German Federal association for eMobility (BEM e.V.), New Year’s edition 2015

Electric mobility has started to rock the automotive world. Recently strangers to the industry, companies like Google start to compete with the long-established players. Those are the facts. Project Black Hungarian names them all and uses them to build an intriguing spy novel.

It’s a fact that not only techies get their money’s worth with this spy novel. In their first co-project, the authors create a fascinating adventure by shining light on the pros and cons of emobility.

Project Black Hungarian was a great read on several levels. First, of course, is the mystery of who or what organization is trying to sabotage the success of the technologies showcased during the rally. Knowing what we know about today’s world, is the idea of an organization trying to stop technological progress that could interrupt profits really not likely? Second, the WAVE rally is a real “thing” occurring annually through Europe. This book gave us fascinating information and stories about the rally and the people involved. Many references and events used in the book are real. Also, many technologies that provide tools for improving our environment are explained in a way that just adds to the suspense of the novel. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a different kind of mystery story to entertain and inform you. I read the English version, which was written very well.

I enjoyed the plot to the story and and the intricate web of characters kept me captivated. I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued by the all the facts about EV technology and appreciated the explanations given in the appendix. Because the details of the EV expedition are based on facts I also found this novel educational and became interested in a field that I previously knew little about.
